Things Fall Out Along the Way - May 2008
Materials: Ceiling - Painted foam board, dark violet light "constellations," and circus-tent-like fabric hanging down. Walls - 2x4s, fake brick-printed masonite, various other masonite boards covered with mosses & "flower eyes" and hung with ivies, some contain little caves within the walls where pieces can be placed (with lights wired to them), and the walls where the cameo wall pieces are hung are upholstered in various fabrics. Trees - 2x4s & painted foam insulation, on top of 2 tree stumps are 2 painted hexagonal end tables that open up to display more art pieces, also wired for lighting. Various fake and real dried plants are placed all around the installation to give it a sense of a hyper stylized woodland cove, most of them encircling tall display tables with red velvet curtains behind them, wired at the top for lighting. Display case - modified hutch, decorated with wooden appliques, bones & fake flowers all painted gold, and lined in red velvet with gold and red trim at the top - case is wired for lighting. The floor is completely covered with aromatic cedar mulch.
Info: An installation that took up an entire enclosed room in The Majestic Galleries in Nelsonville, Ohio. All that can be viewed from the gallery hallway is a circus-esque red and brown velvet curtain, which hides the fantasy world within. Inside, the installation is very dark and feels like (according to various viewers) a mixture between a cave, a kid's clubhouse, a small labyrinth, and slightly reminiscent of an opulent craft store. All the senses are addressed, from the smell coming from both the cedar mulch flooring and the various dried plants used ("craft store smell"), touch from the uneven flooring and the art pieces that are to be interacted with (cabinet doors to open, dolls to wind up, etc.), and even the sounds, as the installation creates a sort of insulated sound buffer from the rest of the gallery area, mixed with the tinklings of the music boxes that have been wound up. This piece invites the viewer to regress back to childhood where wonderment and imagination rule our lives. Curiosity is rewarded - this is a piece that is only fully experienced by those willing to touch and explore. While these images cannot come close to the true experience of the show, we have tried to document all of the nooks and crannies as well as wide shots of the entire area, floor to ceiling. There are also images of a person inside of the installation, to give a sense of scale. The walls are individual, and thus can be moved and arranged in many different ways to fit any installation space, and create a new experience with every new showing.
